About the Department

Introduction: The Department of Physics has been established in the year 2002, some sixteen years after the establishment of Govt. Degree College, Pulwama. Some 34 students were enrolled in physics by that time and the department was housed in one staff room and one laboratory room in the science block, which was under construction at that time. The department right from the day of its establishment has been on a course of speedy progress. This is the 18th year of academic journey of the department in this College and from the last few years the number of students for opting physics as one of their subjects has swelled many folds. The department offers U.G. Courses in Physics and is affiliated to the University of Kashmir, Srinagar. The department has grown enormously in terms of enrollment, and attained self-sufficiency in terms of facilities required in the labs for conducting the lab course smoothly. The objective of the Physics Laboratory is to demonstrate the principles of physics through experiments and to encourage show how measurement, experimental design and modern instrumentation can be used effectively and to encourage the creative use of experimental and theoretical physics in areas which may be unfamiliar. The laboratory of the department was recently fully renovated and upgraded with latest and modern infrastructure and design. Our state of art laboratory is equipped with modern experiments to help the students learn the concepts of Physics with experiments. It is designed to give practice of taking measurements, analyzing data and drawing inferences while the students experiment. The lab is quite spacious and very well ventilated to ensure proper availability of light in it. Each of the laboratories can accommodate a good number of students conducting experiments in groups depending on the experiment at hand. The facilities like uninterrupted power supply are up to date. It has a very nice spacious dark room of modern type to carry out some specific experiments. The laboratory has recently got a Departmental Computer lab as some semesters have computer programming in their syllabi. The Physics laboratory is equipped with latest instruments for conducting experiments related to Mechanics, electrodynamics, Thermal physics and thermodynamics, Optics, Modern Physics and Electronics catering the needs of our students. The students primarily undergo training for full hand operation of measuring instruments such as Vernier Calipers, Screw Gauge, Spherometer, Travelling Microscope and many more. In addition to the normal funding given by the Govt. of J&K, the UGC has also provided sufficient funds for the purchase of some equipment in session 2012-13. The department has 02 permanent faculty members. Since 2004, a number of batches have completed their B.Sc. degrees with Physics as one of the subjects. Several candidates have undergone for PG programme in physics in different Universities inside and outside the valley. Some of them have been either awarded or are pursuing Ph.D degree. The teachers have been allotted 02 hours of administrative work in addition to 04 hours of class work per day. The Department of Physics under the guidance of HOD monitors overall performance of the students through regular class tests. The students are also updated for the annual examination by conducting the half yearly tests. All the faculty members are gauzed by obtaining feedback from the students.
