About the Department

The Department of English Language and Literature is one of the oldest departments of the college and has the same year of inception as that of the college, i.e., 1986. English being a compulsory subject for all streams, teaching English has always been the top most priority for the department. As a subject, English being all-pervasive, our department serves more than 6000 undergraduate students yearly. The six (06) permanent faculty members of the Department, with the support of ten (10) colleagues on academic arrangement, driven by a combination of excellence and professional acumen foster the accomplishments of undergraduate students through their distinctive interests and student-centered and learning-focused teaching. Being the seminal department of the College, the Department of English Language and Literature contributes in essential ways to students’ personal growth, knowledge, and critical thinking abilities. We are committed to innovative teaching, scholarship, and service that promote cultural awareness, unity in diversity, and ethical responsibility through the study of language and literature.

The English Language and Literature Department’s graduates go on to choose successful careers at different levels – in education, research, professional-writing , editing , publishing, journalism and entrepreneurship. With its strong emphasis on developing students’ strengths as creative and critical thinkers, with a strong foundation in the humanities, our graduates have proved their mettle various areas and at different fora.

HOD's Message

Dear students Department of English Language and Literature (DELL) ,Govt. Degree College Pulwama has the distinction of being one of the pioneering departments of the college. Ever since its establishment in the year 1986, DELL has been striving hard to cater to the academic and intellectual needs of the students. The department has in the recent past started some market-oriented and skill enhancement courses besides routine classroom work. English Speaking Course, in this regard, is one such initiative. The department provides a platform to the students to give flight to their wings of imagination and hone their skills. The department welcomes you to the world of language and literature and wishes you all the best in this noble pursuit.
