Department of Bio-Technology

The Department of Biotechnology has started functioning from the academic session 2021 with the admission of the first batch of students. With this, Government Degree College Pulwama joins a few other prestigious institutes of J & K (UT) offering biotechnology as one of the core UG subjects in applied sciences. The department is housed on the 1st floor of new science block with all necessary student-centric facilities in place including the departmental library. The student intake for the department has been restricted to 40 for better services, for whom one permanent faculty is there to take care of their classwork and practicals.

 HoD's Message

Today’s world cannot be imagined without biotechnology, as innovation and entrepreneurship which are driving factors for sustainable growth are inbuilt into it. Biotechnology has played and is playing a pivotal role in mitigating the challenges which the biosphere is currently facing – be it food security, environmental degradation & climate change, or affordable healthcare. No one can forget the contribution of biotechnology in  coming to the rescue of humanity through the development of the COVID-19 vaccine. With all this background, I congratulate Higher Education Department for taking the right step forward by introducing biotechnology in J & K colleges, which will not only enhance creativity and critical thinking among the students but also will lead to job creation through skill development. With the introduction of the subject in 2021, Government Degree College Pulwama joins a few other reputed institutes of J & K by providing opportunities for the students of Pulwama and adjoining areas to dive deep into the scientific endeavour for their career progression and national development. As head of the department, I assure the student community in general and life sciences / biotechnology students in particular that the department will leave no stone unturned in offering the best possible academic / co-curricular services with a focus on experimentation & observation, moral and professional development, not forgetting mentoring and career counseling.
